Let Justice Roll On (Part 2)
Amos, the shepherd turned prophet, is proclaiming coming destruction to nations by preaching what is called War Oracles. Such War Oracles, found also in other prophetic books, encourage God’s children to trust God to protect them and destroy the nations that threatened them. Before the army would go into battle, the priest or prophet would seek whether the battle was God’s will, with the promised defeat of their enemies. These war oracles would fan enthusiasm as troops agreed with the prophet’s report, shouting their approval. After proclaiming War Oracles against the surrounding nations, Amos then proclaimed imminent punishment for the people of Judah and Israel, who are God’s people, but have been rejecting God’s justice to love as God loves.
