Power often seeks recognition. Jesus chose a towel.

On the night before the cross, Jesus knew what was ahead. He knew who would betray Him, who would deny Him, and who would abandon Him. Yet He knelt and washed the feet of every disciple gathered around the table. His love was not determined by their worthiness but by His character.

In a world that often celebrates influence, status, and visibility, Jesus reveals another way. True strength is expressed through humble service. Courage is found not only in bold action but also in choosing love when no one is watching, extending grace when it is undeserved, and serving without seeking recognition.

As the Be Strong and Courageous journey turns toward a new season, this final invitation from the Community series lingers: not simply to admire the example of Jesus, but to practice it. The blessing Jesus promises is found not merely in knowing His words, but in living them.

Guest preacher Paula Fuller concluded South Bay Community Church's Be Strong and Courageous in Community series by inviting the congregation to reflect on what they had been putting into practice over the past six months. Looking back over the year's invitations to be strong and courageous in prayer, in God's Word, in body, mind and spirit, and finally in community, she reminded listeners that spiritual formation is intended to shape not only what we know but how we live.

Drawing from John 13, Paula explored Jesus' washing of the disciples' feet as a profound expression of courageous love. She noted that this sign was unique among Jesus' miracles because it was performed exclusively for His disciples. At the very moment Jesus knew His hour had come, fully aware of His authority, His impending suffering, Peter's denial, and Judas' betrayal, He chose to lay aside His outer garment, take the posture of a servant, and wash the feet of those He loved. Rather than using His power to elevate Himself, Jesus revealed that true authority is expressed through humility and self-giving love.

The message also highlighted how the foot washing points beyond itself to the cross. Just as Jesus stooped to wash His disciples' feet, He would soon offer His life as the ultimate act of sacrificial love. Even Judas, whom Jesus knew would betray Him, received this act of grace, demonstrating that Christ's love extends beyond what is earned or deserved. In this way, the foot washing became both a picture of God's love and an invitation into the kind of community Jesus was creating through His death and resurrection.

Paula emphasized that Jesus did not simply perform this act as an example to admire. He called His followers to imitate it. His command to "wash one another's feet" invites believers to embrace lives marked by humility, service, intentional love, and a willingness to care for one another in practical ways. The Christian life is not measured merely by biblical knowledge but by obedience that takes shape in everyday relationships. As Jesus declared, "Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them."

Closing with a personal reflection, Paula shared how seasons of caregiving and hidden service had become a "foot washing season" in her own life, teaching her that God often forms His people through unseen acts of faithfulness. She encouraged the congregation to consider where Christ may be inviting each person to step beyond comfort and practice courageous love through humble service this week.
